The Albert Dock in Liverpool, England, was opened in 1846 by its namesake, Prince Albert of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha. The Albert Dock offers a unique blend of culture, cuisine and shopping. The five Grade I buildings, covering 1.25 million s, make the Albert Dock complex the largest set of Grade 1 in the UK. Part of the Albert Dock redevelopment, this is Salthouse Dock. The unmistakable Port of Liverpool Building, Cunard and Royal Liver buildings provide the impressive architectural backdrop. Just entering Salthouse Dock is the yellow ex-army DUKW (pronounced “duck”) amphibious vehicle which provides land and water tours to the dockland visitor. Following a spectacular refurbishment by the Arrowcraft Group in partnership with Merseyside Development Corporation, the Albert Dock was restored to its former glory and is now once again a centrepiece of the renowned Merseyside waterfront.
The Albert Dock represents Britain’s largest group of grade one listed buildings and contains one and a quarter million square feet of floor space. The Beatles Story, Britannia Vaults in Albert Dock. Built in 1990, The Beatles Story is is a class visitor attraction, tells the story of the Beatles. Albert Dock itself and the adjoining Canning Half Tide Dock provide prestige waterside frontage within Liverpool City Centre, and are visited by various vessels throughout the year – particularly during the Mersey Festival.
The Albert Dock is now the largest group of Grade One listed buildings in the UK and as such the Holiday Inn Express Liverpool has retained many of the original features.
